Mosin Nagant M91/30 Sniper Rifle with PU 3.5x sniper scope and down turned bolt handle - 7.62x54mm R. The PU scope on this example is one of the repurposed SVT-40 scopes, 91/30 PU scopes had consistent tube diameter as the mount rings were shorter.

The 3-line rifle M1891, colloquially known as the Mosin Nagant rifle in the west or Mosin rifle in Russia, is the standard infantry service rifle of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union from 1891 to around 1945. One of the longest serving bolt action rifles in history, the rifle would see use up to the 1960s in Soviet client states, and still sees continued use in various conflicts in the present day.

Originally designed by Captain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin, the rifle was trialed in 1889 alongside two other rifles, including one designed by Belgian Léon Nagant. Mosin's design was officially adopted in 1891, but with modifications made by the rifle commission, who took some design points from Nagant's design. This, combined with Nagant's loss in the competition, led to Nagant starting a legal dispute with the GAU commission, which was eventually settled with a payment to Nagant.

As the rifle's design included parts designed not just by Mosin, but also by commission members and Nagant, the rifle entered service under the impersonal "3-line rifle M1891" name ("3-line" refers to its .30 caliber). Discussions of the dispute in the Western press led to the coinage of the name "Mosin Nagant rifle"; meanwhile in Russia, the rifle's impersonal designation was considered unusual, and by the 1920s the name of "Mosin rifle" (Russian: "винтовка Мосина", vintovka mosina) began to be used colloquially and semi-officially, with "Mosinka" (the feminine form of "Mosin") and "Trekhlineyka" (lit. "3-liner") being common nicknames.

The M1891, over its three decades of production, steadily received revisions to its parts, resulting in many iterations of M1891 configurations. It is important to note that many M91s can be found with a mix of early and late features due to using replacement parts.

  • Early M1891 rifles are configured with a finger rest, sling swivels on the magazine and front barrel band, early flat rear sight leaf, and no upper handguard.
  • Later M1891 rifles have their finger rest removed, have their sling swivels replaced with sling slots, and feature upper handguards, Konovalov rear sight, and late pattern barrel bands.

Aside from variations of the original Infantry Rifle, the M1891 also features several full-length variants:

  • Dragoon: A shortened variant developed for mounted infantry. They have a 2.75 in shorter barrel. As with the Infantry Rifle, several slightly updated reconfigurations of the Dragoon also exist.
  • Cossack: Another shortened variant developed for cavalry. Its main difference from the Dragoon is that it is not issued with a bayonet.
  • M91/30: An update of the M1891 rifle in 1930 by the Soviet Union. It is an updated version of the Dragoon and thus has a Dragoon-length barrel, and features many other changes to parts. It can be visually distinguishsed by its round hooded front sight. It was the most common bolt action rifle used by the Red Army.

The Mosin was also the first firearm to chamber the supreme champion of longest serving centerfire firearm cartridges in history, the venerable 7.62x54mm R, which is still issued and used in armies to this day.

Mosin Nagant Model 1944 Carbine

Error creating thumbnail: File missing
Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine, with attached side-folding bayonet - 7.62x54mm R. Note the slightly longer barrel ahead of the front sight to accommodate locking in the bayonet, brass reinforcements around the sling holes and an integral bayonet attached to the barrel.

The M44 carbine entered trials (50,000 units) in 1943 and fully entered service in late 1944. It is not commonly seen in wartime photographs, which resulted in the commonly-held misconception that the M44 saw very little action in the closing months of the war. The M44 and M91/30 saw battle in the hands of North Korean Soldiers in 1950-53 and in the hands of the Viet Cong and PAVN during the 1960s.

Mosin Nagant "Obrez" with pistol grip - 7.62x54mm R

Sawed-off Mosin-Nagant rifles are commonly known as "obrez", the name coming from the Russian word "обрез", which means "sawed-off". While "Obrez" in Russian refers to sawed-off firearms in general, in English the word is generally associated with sawed-off Mosin-Nagants specifically.

The practise of sawing off Mosin-Nagants was common during the Russian civil war, when criminals and rebels would cut down their Mosin-Nagant rifles to pistol size for easy concealment. Some of the Obrez have their entire wooden stock removed and replaced with a pistol grip.

Mosin-Nagant M/28-30 - 7.62x54mmR

The highlight of the Mosin-Nagant evolution is certainly the Finnish M39, which also comes with a more ergonomic pistol grip shaft (Early models have, however, straight grips). At SAKO, production of the M39 began in 1940. Firms such as VKT (aka Valmet) also produced the M39, partly with Belgian barrels. Even after the war until the mid-sixties, M39s were built or old weapons were renewed in Finland.

In this model, its designers also narrowed the running dimensions, so that reloaders can load instead of the bullets in .311 diameter, the more popular .308 projectiles. The cleanly adjusted pressure point deductions are more in line with the habits of western (sports) shooters than the pressure-less Russian rifles. However, the Finns also have the disadvantage that they are relatively rare - only a few hundred thousand pieces were built (about 130,000), so that they are difficult to obtain, and this at rising prices. The main way to tell the difference between a Russian Mosin-Nagant and an M39 is that it has a different stock design and a different front sight.

NOTE: Except for some components, such as the bolt, trigger, and magazine, the parts of these rifles are NOT interchangeable with Russian models.

The vz. 54 is a Czechoslovakian variant of the Mosin-Nagant rifle adopted in 1954. They were built from Soviet-produced Mosins between 1956 and 1958, and served as the Czechoslovakian military's standard sniper rifle until their adoption of the SVD. Modifications include a different bolt handle, a different stock, a different scope mount, and a hooded front sight heavily inspired by that of the Karabiner 98k.

The Vz. 54 is used by the following actors in the following movies and television shows:

TOZ R-32 shotgun - 32 gauge

These bolt-action shotguns, nicknamed "Frolovka", are conversions of Mosin Nagant rifles into hunting shotguns, designed by engineer Pyotr Nikolaevich Frolov and manufactured in the 1920's at TOZ. A surplus of Mosin Nagant rifles, most heavily battered during World War I and the Russian Civil War, were converted into 20 - 32 gauge shotguns. Such a measure allowed to quickly cover the lack of cheap hunting shotguns in Soviet Russia. While most "Frolovka" were converted from Russian M1891 rifles, other rifles, such as the Austro-Hungarian Mannlicher M1895 and the French Gras M1874, were also used. A second wave of Frolov conversions were undertaken after World War II for the exact same reasons.

"Frolovka" shotguns differ in shape. While the 20 and 24 gauge version mostly lacks the typical Mosin magazine, the 28 and 32 Gauge version retains it.

From 1945 to 1948, TOZ produced the R-32 (TOZ-32). This gun resembles a Frolov, but is exclusively a single shot.
