Story of a Real Man Повесть о настоящем человеке ; Povest o nastoyashchem cheloveke Aleksandr Stolper and adapted from the novel by Boris Polevoy which it turn is based on the real story of Soviet pilot Aleksey Maresyev (in the novel and film he is called Meresyev). After being shot down in air battle in April 1942, he survived 18-day-long journey in snow-covered forest but his legs were badly injured. In hospital, both of his legs were amputated above the knee. Despite this, Maresyev mastered the control of his prosthetic devices, made the returning to flying and served in Soviet Air Forces until the end of the war, becoming a fighter ace.
