Tom of Finland

Tom of Finland is a 2017 multi-nationally produced film biography directed by Dome Karukoski, who was also responsible for the screenplay together with Aleksi Bardy. The film cinematically depicts the life of Touko Valio Laaksonen. Laaksonen, known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland, was a Finnish artist known for his homoerotic drawings. For the Finn Touko Laaksonen, his return home from the front of World War II does not bring the peace he had hoped for: In his homeland, he cannot openly live out his homosexuality and faces the constant threat of denunciation and prosecution. Tom does not even reveal to his sister Kaija that he is gay, and he has to keep his relationship with the dancer Veli Mäkinen a secret. To express his feelings at least in an artistic way, he begins to draw homoerotic pictures. Under the artist's pseudonym, these works eventually reach the public, and they become a symbol of the revolution for gay men worldwide.
