The first version of the Browning Hi-Power was known as the FN P-35. It was initially developed by John Browning and completed by Dieudonné Saive (who would later design the FN FAL) following Browning's death, and adopted by Belgium in 1935. During World War II, the Germans would occupy the Belgian firearms factories and continued to produce this gun, deleting the magazine safety to reduce production time, as the "Pistole 640(b)" (where the "(b)" meant "Belgische", "Belgian") with Waffenamt stamps.  The design would be adopted by other countries and manufactured abroad with the generic designation simply as the Browning High Power or the Hi-Power. The "High Power" / "Hi-Power" designation was actually meant to indicate the higher round capacity of the gun (13 rounds) when compared to other contemporary semi-autos like the M1911 series (7 rounds), rather than the "power" of the weapon itself. The original Hi-Power went out of production in 2017.
In 2021, Springfield Armory introduced the first American made Hi-Power dubbed the SA-35. The SA-35 is primarily based on the original P-35 design, but includes modern design features like improved sights, improved feed ramp, and a 15-round magazine capacity. The SA-35 also lacks the unpopular magazine disconnect safety of the original Hi-Power, which is often removed by owners to improve the pistol's heavy trigger pull.
In 2022, FN America announced a new "High Power" that was inspired by the original design but does not resemble a classic Hi-Power.

The Inglis Hi-Power is the Canadian-manufactured version of the original Belgian HP, produced while Belgium was under Nazi occupation, utilizing blueprints provided by FN staff who had fled to England. It remains the standard service sidearm of the Canadian Armed Forces to this day, but is expected to be replaced by the SIG-Sauer P320 in mid-2023. It can be identified by the distinctive 'humped' fixed rear sights. A version with adjustable rear sights and a detachable shoulder stock/holster was also produced for export to China during World War II.

Some of the Chinese contract pistols ended up in Canadian and British service after delivery to China became virtually impossible.

FN Browning Hi-Power Silver Chrome
The Fegyver Es Gepgyar PJK-9HP is a Hungarian manufactured clone of the the famous Belgian Browning Hi-Power. The company is more commonly known as FEG. Not very well known to Americans for many years, FEG began importing its various models into the United States in the 1990's with the end of the Cold War. FEG has supplied firearms to the Hungarian military and police for many decades. While FEG might not be as flashy as other companies the company's products have a reputation for being solid, well made firearms which are also affordable. The P9R version (US imported version of the PJK-9HP) is Double/Single Action and has a modified trigger guard and shorter grip profile. The FP9 version is Single Action only and can easily be identified by the ventilation ribs that run across most of the length of the slide.

FN P-35 - 9x19mm

Inglis Hi-Power with tangent sights - 9x19mm

FÉG PJK-9HP

The FÉG PJK-9HP is a Hungarian manufactured clone of the the Belgian Browning Hi-Power, manufactured by FÉG (Fegyver-és Gépgyár). Not very well known to Americans for many years, FÉG began importing its various models into the United States in the 1990's with the end of the Cold War. FÉG has supplied firearms to the Hungarian military and police for many decades. While FÉG might not be as flashy as other companies the company's products have a reputation for being solid, well made firearms which are also affordable. The P9R version (the U.S. commercial import version of the PJK-9HP) is Double/Single Action and has a modified trigger guard and shorter grip profile. The P9R also does not take Hi-Power magazines and has quite a bit of Smith & Wesson Model 59 inspiration. The FP9 version is Single Action only and can easily be identified by the ventilation ribs that run across most of the length of the slide.
