In Japan, many Type 54 pistols are imported through illegal gun running channels, and many are used by Yakuzas as one of their used firearms. The Zastava M57 is the Yugoslavian copy of the Soviet/Russian Tokarev TT-33 made by Zastava Oruzje in Kragujevac, Serbia. The M57 has a slightly taller frame and magazine, increasing the capacity from 8 rounds to 9. It uses the same ammunition as the Tokarev TT-33 and like the Tokarev, it does not have the frame mounted safety that the Chinese Tokarev has. The M57 was the standard sidearm of the Yugoslavian military until 1992 when the country collapsed. New production M57s are still being manufactured by Zastava with modern safety features. | The Zastava M57 is the Yugoslavian copy of the Soviet/Russian Tokarev TT-33 made by Zastava Oruzje in Kragujevac, Serbia. The Tokarev TT-33 and variants have appeared in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
Tokarev TT-33
The TT-33 was introduced (as TT-30) in 1930 by Fedor Tokarev, who drew heavily from John Browning's FN Browning Model 1903 and Colt Model 1911 pistols. In 1933, the design was slightly changed, in particular, with an updated firing mechanism; the removable cover on the back of the grip (for quicker access to the trigger group) was also removed, making the frame one-piece, and the weapon more technologically advanced and less expensive to manufacture. The TT-30/33 was intended to replace the obsolete Nagant M1895 and a mix of various other revolvers and semi-auto pistols, which were in service, but production was never sufficient to fully replace the vast number of M1895 revolvers already in service and manufacture. The pistol is chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev, which is based on the 7.63x25mm Mauser round of the Mauser C96 (which had been widely used by Bolshevik forces during the Russian Civil War) but loaded to higher pressure levels.
The basic TT-33 has no safety of any kind, but pistols imported to the US after the Gun Control Act of 1968 require a "positive manually operated safety device" under ATF Form 4590, and so all such guns will have an aftermarket safety added.
In 1939 - 1942, an experimental version with a double-stack 15 round magazine was developed. This variant (known as the TT-42) was produced in 1942 in the amount of about 1000 pistols, although it did not replace the TT-33. In the early 1950s, the possibility of a "revival" of this modification was considered, but it did not happen, apparently due to the transition to the new 9x18mm Makarov ammunition and the corresponding weapons under it, like the Makarov PM and APS.

Type 54 / Model 213
The Type 54 pistol is a Chinese copy of the TT-33 pistol, and was the former standard-issue pistol in the Chinese People's Liberation Army. The pistol was manufactured by a wide array of Chinese state factories, and after the 1980s, was exported to the west by China's newly-founded Norinco export company (primarily to the U.S.). Though the export guns are marked with "Made in China by Norinco", Norinco was not their actual manufacturer, merely their exporter; the guns' actual manufacturers can be identified by their roll marks. The majority of the guns are manufactured by Factory 626 in Heilongjiang, also the primary manufacturer of the Type 56 assault rifle — who counterintuitively use "66" as their roll mark.
There are two export models of the Type 54, the 7.62x25mm Model 54-1 and the the 9x19mm Model 213, both of which feature manual safeties to comply with American regulations. There are also three variants under Model 213: The base Model 213, the Model 213A with a 14 round capacity box magazine, and the Model 213B with revised molded grips to improve comfort for the shooter.
In Japan, many Type 54 pistols are imported through illegal gun running channels, and many are used by Yakuzas as one of their used firearms. As a result, the Type 54 Pistol has become a byword for an illegal/Yakuza pistol in Japanese media. It's also known as "Black Star (黒星)" or "Tokarev (トカレフ)".

Zastava M57

FÉG Tokagypt 58
The FÉG Tokagypt 58 is a Hungarian export variant of the TT-33 chambered in 9x19mm Parabellum. Fegyver és Gépgyár of Hungary originally produced TT-33s as the Pisztoly 48.M. In 1957, FÉG received a contract from the Egyptian Army for 30,000 TT-33 type pistols in 9x19mm Parabellum. The 9mm TT-33 variant was originally known as the TT-9P, and later became officially marked as "Tokagypt 58", a portmanteau of Tokarev and Egypt. After a partial delivery, Egypt cancelled the remaining order, and the rest was sold commercially.

BUSS GS-90
The BUSS GS-90 is a blank fire only variant of the TT-33 manufactured by Biuro Uruchomień Sprzętu Specjalnego between 1989 and 1990. Unusually, it is not built from scratch but is built from surplus Polish army Pw wz.33 pistols fitted with a new barrel and a modified slide. It can be distinguished from an original Pw wz.33 by its shorter slide and the large medallions bearing the "BUSS" logo in the center of the grip plates.
