The PPSh-41 (Russian: Пистолет-пулемёт Шпагина; Pistolet Pulemyot Shpagina), was a Soviet submachine gun used by the Red Army during World War 2. Designed to be easier to manufacture and more reliable than the PPD-38/40 that it replaced, it was a great success in spite of its weight. This gun was used with a 71 round drum magazine (matched to the weapon and not necessarily interchangeable with those from other guns), but since 1942 the PPSh-41 was also used with 35 round stick magazines, since the "disk" (as the Soviets preferred to call it) was heavy and hard to load. Nevertheless, the drum magazine remained the most commonly issued type throughout the war. The PPSh-41 has become completely inseparable from the image of a generic WWII Red Army trooper (quite accurately since entire rifle companies were equipped with them: the fact that two could be produced by sawing a Mosin-Nagant barrel in half certainly helped with this), and thus is found on countless monuments.

The PPS-43 is a partially related successor development, but is often incorrectly cited as a derivative or variant of the PPSh-41.

During the siege of Leningrad, the PPS-43 "Pistolet-Pulemyot Sudaeva" submachine gun was developed. Manufactured entirely within the city under siege, it was lighter and easier to use than the PPSh-41, dispensing with the drum magazine in favor of the 35 round stick magazine. However, the design was virtually suppressed after the war, though some production did occur in Soviet satellite states.  Note: The PPS-43 is commonly misidentified as the PPSh-43, which is incorrect, but understandable since it is a descendant of the PPSh-41.

The K-50M is a North Vietnamese version of the PPSh-41 with a MAT-49 collapsible wire stock, wooden AK pistol grip, and shortened barrel and heat shield. It uses standard PPSh-41 magazines; the 35-round curved boxes work regardless, whereas the 71-round drums only work when the stock is extended.

Suomi KP/-31 (aka Suomi M/31), commonly known as Suomi submachine gun (Suomi konepistooli) in Finland, was a sub-machine gun based on the early Bergmann MP18 design. First designed in 1922, by Aimo J. Lahti, the gun was revealed to public in 1925. It is among one of the most successful gun designs of World War II, and many of the designs were later copied by the Soviets for their PPSh-41 and PPD-40 sub-machine guns. The Suomi (which means Finland) KP/-31 was in service in the Finnish Armed Forces from 1931 to the 1960's, when it finally became obsolete as the Rk 62 replaced it. Some special versions stayed in service through the 1980s.
The MP 41(r) (Maschinenpistole 41(r)) is a German submachine gun developed from captured Soviet PPSh-41 submachine guns. The conversion features rechambering for 9x19mm Parabellum instead of the standard 7,62x25mm TT.

PPSh-41 - 7.62x25mm Tokarev.

Specifications

(1941 – 1945)

 • Type: Submachine Gun
 • Caliber: 7.62x25mm Tokarev, 7.62x25mm Mauser (German MP717(r)), 9x19mm Parabellum (German MP41(r) conversion and SKL-41 semi-auto clone)
 • Weight: 8 lbs (3.6 kg) empty, 11.9 lbs (5.4 kg) with fully loaded drum
 • Length: 33.2 in (84.3 cm)
 • Barrel length: 10.6 in (26.9 cm)
 • Capacity: 35-round box magazine, 71-round drum magazine (early war 71-rounder would tend to misfeed if loaded with more than 65)
 • Fire Modes: Semi / auto (900-1,000 rpm), some mid-production versions from small Soviet factories auto only, semi only on modern closed-bolt civilian copies

The PPSh-41 and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
