The Smith & Wesson Model 19 | The Smith & Wesson Model 19 is an 'upgrade' of the very popular Smith & Wesson Model 15 (which was the Model 10 with adjustable sights). With the advent of the more powerful .357 Magnum round, Smith & Wesson offered a newer version of the Model 15, beefed up to take the then new cartridge of the time. The .357 Magnum Model 19 was adopted by many law enforcement (and some military), however, budgetary concerns and 'political considerations' kept the traditional .38 revolvers such as the Model 10 & Model 15s in service for a long time, concurrent with the active usage of the Model 19.

This | The "Smython", also referred to as a "Smolt" was produced when a barrel from a Colt Python was mated to a Smith & Wesson Model 19 frame (although other types of "Smythons" have even been produced with other guns, such as a Ruger Security Six.) This combination was initially done as a niche (and expensive) custom affair, typically for PPC or Bullseye competition matches. Their existence came about because the Smith & Wesson action was easier to work on and customize for competition than that of the more elaborate, expensive and finer-tuned Colt Python.
The Colt barrel was specifically much more desirable and more accurate, as it featured both a better rate and direction of twist; the Colt had the faster and more traditional 1:14" left-handed rifling pitch in a tapered bore that offered better projectile stability than that of the 1:18 and 3/4" right-handed twist of the Smith. The barrel thread on the two revolvers were completely different, and, as such, it would take extremely qualified gunsmith to complete this conversion. Because of the complexity a conversion like this would require, very few Smythons were made properly. Despite existing prior to the 1970s, the Smython became mainstream to some extent when it was produced in considerable number beginning in 1977 by Davis Co. by fitting a 3", 4" or 6" Python barrel to a Smith & Wesson revolver.
This craze resulted in S&W making the L-frame models (particularly the 686) as a direct result of this combination, thus rendering the need of a specific conversion obsolete. Eventually, in 1999 the Colt Python was discontinued and, due to replacement barrels running out as well as the inherent risk of such a skilled conversion, the "Smythons" effectively ceased to be produced, though some may still be custom built for collectors (those with deep pockets) from time to time.

Latest revision as of 13:15, 9 December 2023
The Smith & Wesson Model 19 is an 'upgrade' of the very popular Smith & Wesson Model 15 (which was the Model 10 with adjustable sights).
The Smith & Wesson Model 19 and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:

"Smython"
The "Smython", also referred to as a "Smolt" was produced when a barrel from a Colt Python was mated to a Smith & Wesson Model 19 frame (although other types of "Smythons" have even been produced with other guns, such as a Ruger Security Six.) This combination was initially done as a niche (and expensive) custom affair, typically for PPC or Bullseye competition matches.
