The Benelli M2 Tactical and Field model shotguns were introduced in 2005. Trap and Field models are made of the M2 as well as Tactical models. It can be distinguished from the M1 by the lack of a receiver screw beneath the rear of the ejection port (as seen on M1); both feature a bolt release button directly below bolt handle. The M2 also has a unique foregrip (which doesn't fit on any of the other M series shotguns). Also the back of the receiver is slightly different and must have its own buttstocks, whereas the M1 and the M3 have interchangeable foregrips and buttstocks.

The Benelli M3 is a combination Pump-Action and Semi-Automatic Shotgun. This is actually an analogue of the earlier (and less successful) [[Beretta M3P]], but fed from a standard under-barrel tubular magazine. While the M3 and M1 are similar in appearance, a sure way to tell them apart is that Surefire does not make a fore-end mounted light for the M3. There is also the size difference between the standard magazine tube extension and the action type switch of the M3. The action type switch is located at the forward end of the forearm, and is formed as an annular knurled ring.

Unlike the previous M series shotguns, rather than the Benelli Inertia Drive system for semi-automatic operation, the M4 uses a new proprietary dual gas piston system for semi-automatic operation called the "Auto-regulating gas-operated (ARGO) system". This new system was designed per specifications from the U.S. Marine Corps. It goes by the designation 'M1014 Joint Services Combat Shotgun' in the US military and 'L128A1' in the British military.
Civilian versions of this shotgun are sold with a fixed stock only, and 5-round tube magazine that ordinarily cannot be extended.

The Benelli M Series Super 90 Shotguns are a series of 12 gauge Tactical shotguns based on the H&K recoil system, first introduced in the H&K Model 512 Auto Shotgun. The Super 90 refers to only the defense / tactical models, since Benelli does offer hunting, trap & field versions of some of the same shotguns. The only departure is the M4 which keeps the same exterior design but introduced a new proprietary gas operated system, the "Auto-regulating gas-operated (ARGO)" system.

Benelli M2

Benelli M3
The Benelli M3 is a combination Pump-Action and Semi-Automatic Shotgun. This is actually an analogue of the earlier (and less successful) Beretta M3P, but fed from a standard under-barrel tubular magazine.

Benelli M4
