M14 rifle - 7.62x51mm NATO

The United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm, M14, more commonly referred to as simply M14 is an American battle rifle, the successor to the M1 Garand. It was the standard-issue rifle of the United States armed forces from 1959 to 1964 when it was replaced by the M16 rifle series.

The M14's origins can be traced to a number of modifications considered to the M1 Garand in the waning days of the Second World War. One of these was the T20- an M1 Garand modified to accept Browning Automatic Rifle magazines and select-fire capability. This design proved to be the most popular and would serve as the basis for prototype rifles that would eventually become the M14. Springfield Armory produced two different rifles, the T44 and T47, in the early 1950s as prospective new service rifles, both chambered in the newly-standardized 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. In 1952, these two rifles were presented to the Infantry Board at Fort Benning, Georgia for trials, with their competition being the T48, a license-produced FN FAL.

The T47 was found to perform poorly and was dropped from the trials in 1953. Further testing showed the T48 slightly outperforming the T44 in the areas of reliability and ease of field maintenance. However, the T48 was shown to perform poorly in Arctic conditions. In the end, the US Army chose the T44 due to being a pound lighter, easier to manufacture, and because it was argued that the existing manufacturing base for the M1 Garand would mean the new M14 could be produced cheaply and quickly, although this idea was found to be infeasible. Production was initially awarded Springfield Armory, Winchester, and Harrington & Richardson. The first M14s were delivered to the US Army in July 1959.

When the United States entered the Vietnam War in 1964, the M14 was the standard-issue rifle of US troops. The long, heavy rifle was quickly found to be ill-suited for jungle warfare and the wooden stocks would swell in the moist environment, adversely affecting accuracy. The M14 was intended to replace the M1 Garand, M3 Grease Gun, M1 Carbine and Browning Automatic Rifle. However, 7.62x51mm NATO was much too powerful to take the role of a submachine gun and the M14 quickly became notorious for being nigh-uncontrollable when fired in fully-automatic. The M14 lacked the weight that allowed for the BAR to be controllable during automatic fire. On the other hand, 7.62x51mm NATO's firepower and long range was a boon in the thick brush of Vietnam's jungles.

The shortcomings of the M14 in Vietnam were part of reasoning for the development of its replacement, the M16 rifle. The M14 was officially replaced by the M16A1 in 1967. With a service life of under ten years, it is the shortest-serving standard issue US military rifle so far. The M14 remains in service in the US as a ceremonial, parade, and training rifle used by honor guards, drill teams, and cadets. Despite being officially withdrawn from service, M14s have been used as marksman's rifles during Desert Storm, the Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, and other Middle Eastern conflicts of the 21st century. These M14s are often fitted with scopes, polymer or fiberglass stocks, and other modernization accessories. The M14 still sees frontline combat use in service with other nations and non-state actors to this very day.

M14E2 - 7.62x51mm NATO

The M14E2, later redesignated the M14A1, is a select-fire automatic rifle variant of the M14 developed during the Vietnam War. It was a replacement for the ill-fated M15 rifle, and both of them served in the same automatic rifle role as the Browning Automatic Rifle. The M14E2 saw use in the Vietnam War.

The M14E2 can be distinguished by its pistol grip stock with a curved buttstock, folding vertical foregrip, bipod, and improved muzzle brake.

The M21 SWS is a selective-fire M14 National match rifle with the selector lever locked in the Semi-Automatic position. There are no M21 Rifles known to be in US Movie Armories as they are all NFA weapons due to the Full Auto fire control lug on the right rear of the receiver. For the rifle to be a M21 and not a Springfield M1A the locked FA mechanism should be visible on the right side of the receiver.

The Mk 14 Mod 0 is a modernized variant developed for the US Navy SEALs, and thus uses the Navy "Mark" classification. The Mk 14 Mod 0 consists of a M14 inside a Sage EBR chassis (developed for the project) with a shortened 18 inch barrel. The updated Mk 14 Mod 1 features a slightly improved chassis and uses a Magpul CTR stock.

A note is that the Sage EBR chassis is sold commercially, so civilian M14 or M1A rifles can also be modified to resemble the military M14 EBR variants.

The M1A is a civilian version of the M14; identifiable by the fact the rifle lacks a selector switch. Some rifles may have the bayonet lug removed and a muzzle brake in place of a flash hider. The manufacturer is Springfield Armory of Geneseo, Illinois, not to be confused with the U.S. Government owned Springfield Armory of Massachusetts (which closed down in 1968). Some of these weapons are used to impersonate actual M14s or M21s in movies. Sometimes a fake selector switch is installed on some of the movie guns, despite still being semi-auto only rifles.

The M1A was available to the public for purchase after 1974 and sans selector switch, are virtually identical to the Army's M14 Rifles. After the first California Assault Weapon ban of 1989, Springfield Armory and Colt both saw the writing on the wall. Even though they could still sell renamed identical weapons to California, they started removing cosmetic features like bayonet lugs, being that anti-gun politicians criticized the lugs as well as the flash hiders. After Clinton's Federal Assault Weapon Ban of 1994, all production M1As were shipped with muzzle brakes instead of flash hiders and no bayonet lugs. After the Federal Assault Weapon Ban lapsed in 2004, M1As were shipped with both muzzle brakes and the traditional flash hiders, but Springfield stopped providing bayonet lugs, opting to save on weight. Any M14 style rifle seen in a film with a shaved off bayonet lug cannot be a military gun.

Juggernaut Tactical Rogue - 7.62x51mm NATO

The Juggernaut Tactical Rogue is a bullpup chassis system for M14/M1A style rifles. Its resemblance to the SRSS BullDog 762 is not coincidental, with Juggernaut Tactical being founded by the chief designer of the Bulldog after he left SRSS in 2010. Internally, there are several important differences- however, externally the Rogue is very similar to current generation BullDogs. The easiest way to differentiate them is by the number of rows of vents on the upper receiver and by the length of the side accessory rails.
