The Barrett M107 is a variant of the M82 designed for the US Army. Noteworthy differences are the plastic rear grip bolted to the lower part of buttstock and the rail that runs along the top spine of the rifle all the way to the front of the forend. Barrett currently markets this version of the Barrett as the M82A1, but this rifle should be identified as the M107 to distinguish it from the earlier variant. | The Barrett M107 is a variant of the M82 designed for the US Army. It uses the 25x59mm round, originally introduced for the XM307 belt-fed grenade machine gun. As with the XM307, the XM109 can also be reconfigured back to .50 BMG. The XM109 comes with 5-round magazines. | ||
The project's current status is not particularly clear; the original requirement for the weapon was set out in 1994 and prototypes have existed since the late 90s with studies released in 2002; 10 prototypes appear to have been built in 2004 with the XM109 being folded into a broader anti-materiel rifle congressional program along with the Barrett XM500 in 2006, but there has been little information released on further development or potential adoption. In 2004 it was known to have serious problems with recoil due to the heavy projectile and low propellant weight which limited the effectiveness of the muzzle brake, resulting in a recoil impulse of over 60 foot-pounds compared to 36 for an M107; at this point one of the system's goals was to reduce this. Barrett M107

Barrett XM109
The Barrett XM109 (formerly known as the OSW, "Objective Sniper Weapon" and now called AMPR, "Anti-Materiel Payload Rifle") is an anti-materiel rifle under development by Barrett Firearms; it is essentially a new upper receiver for the M82 series.
