Smith & Wesson 39
The Smith & Wesson 39 was the first generation American made double-action 9mm semi-auto handgun based on the German Walther P38 double-action 9mm pistol. Manufactured originally with a steel slide and steel frame until number 927 (1954-1966). At that point the Model 39 became the Model 39-2 and was manufactured with an alloy frame until production ceased in 1983. It was followed by second generation models; the Smith & Wesson 439, Smith & Wesson 539, and the Smith & Wesson 639.

Mk 22 Mod 0 "Hush Puppy"
A modified version of the Smith & Wesson 39 for use by Naval Special Warfare units during the Vietnam War, with an extended and threaded barrel to allow the use of a Mk 3 sound suppressor, a slide lock to prevent the slide from cycling to further reduce noise, higher profile sights for better sighting over a bulky suppressor, and an attachable wire-frame stock. Navy SEAL Teams used both unmodified 39s and Mk 22 Mod 0 Hush Puppies; the Hush Puppy was issued to officers-in-charge (OICs) of MST-2 detachments as their sidearm.
A number of all-steel prototypes were made with 13 round Browning Hi-Power magazines, with a wider grip to accommodate the magazine and without the Hush Puppy modifications, at the request of the SEALs. It was not adopted. The Smith & Wesson 59 was developed as a result of this project.
