Browning Auto 5/Remington Model 11 in Riot Gun configuration - 12 gauge

The Browning Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun. Designed by John Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, it was serially produced from 1902 to 1998 (the last commemorative models were made by FN in 1999). It was originally manufactured by FN, but Browning also would later license the design to Remington, which produced it as their Model 11 (1905–1947). Savage Arms also licensed the design from Browning and produced it as their Model 720 (1930-1949), and Model 745 (1941-1949). Browning's long-recoil design itself served as the operating system for subsequent Remington Model 11-48, Savage (755, 775 models), Franchi AL-48, MTs 21 and several other shotguns.

Contrary to a common mistake, the name of the shotgun does not represent the year when its production was started (which was actually is 1902), but its capacity in the original configuration (4 rounds in the magazine, plus the 5th chambered).

In 2014 Browning Arms Company released the A5, a recoil-operated shotgun with external resemblance to the Auto 5, which is being manufactured in Belgium, assembled in Portugal.
