The Highwaymen
|
The Highwaymen is a 2019 American historical crime film helmed by John Lee Hancock, the director of The Alamo and The Blind Side, and screenwriter of the Costner-starring 1993 feature A Perfect World . This film was written by John Fusco, the screenwriter of such period films as Young Guns, Young Guns II, Thunderheart, and Hidalgo. The movie focuses on the 1934 manhunt for Bonnie and Clyde that was run by the famous Texas Ranger Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner). Woody Harrelson portrays Benjamin Maney Gault who served with Hamer in the Rangers and participated in the manhunt operation. The movie was filmed in Louisiana in the winter and spring of 2018. The production filmed the (in)famous ambush of Bonnie and Clyde at the actual location on Highway 154 in Northern Louisiana from March 21 - March 25, 2018. In order to be period correct, the production had to truck in dirt, since the highway is now a paved two lane highway. Trees were also planted to ensure that the location looked like it did on May 23, 1934. The Highwaymen premiered in the US on Netflix on March 29, 2019.
The following weapons were used in the film The Highwaymen:

Rifles/Carbines
Browning Automatic Rifle (Cutdown)
The custom cutdown model of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was Clyde Barrow's preferred weapon in real life, and is used by both Clyde (Edward Bossert) and Bonnie (Emily Brobst). Hamer also mentions that Clyde "uses a special magazine to fire forty rounds" (which already seems to be referencing an actual very rare extended magazine), while the more common rumor says about sixty rounds in a magazine, made from three ones. However, Clyde's actual use of such magazines is highly questionable.
M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle
The M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle is used by Ted Hinton (Thomas Mann) as part of Frank's posse.
Colt Monitor
Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) is seen using the Colt R80 Monitor, a Colt-manufactured variant of the BAR with a Cutts compensator. This weapon is also used by Benjamin Maney Gault (Woody Harrelson).
M1903A1 Springfield
An M1903A1 Springfield rifle is one of the weapons purchased by Hamer (Kevin Costner) at the gun store.
Remington Model 8 Autoloading Rifle
Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) carries the Remington Model 8 during the final confrontation in Louisiana. Hamer did use a Remington Model 8 in the ambush. The only difference is Hamer's rifle in reality was equipped with a custom 15 round magazine.
Winchester Model 1894
A Winchester Model 1894 rifle is examined and then purchased by Frank at the gun store. When gun-shopping Frank (Kevin Costner) says "let me see that old Winchester 30-30". He also states "I need a gun that won't jam". Several rifles are used by Frank's posse, including by Bienville Parish Sheriff Henderson Jordan (David Born).
Winchester Model 1907
Deputy Bob Alcorn (Dean Denton), of the officers involved with the ambush, uses a Winchester Model 1907 Self Loading Rifle. What makes this particularly interesting is the rifle is the police model with the 10 round detachable box magazine. This version is rarely seen in movies.
