Two M14's were in the IMFDB Logo before being replaced by M16s.

M21/M25 Sniper Rifle

The M21 Sniper rifle is a selective-fire M14 National match rifle with the selector lever locked in the Semi-Automatic position. There are no M21 Rifles known to be in US Movie Armories as they are all NFA weapons due to the Full Auto fire control lug on the right rear of the receiver. For the rifle to be a M21 and not a Springfield M1A the locked FA mechanism should be visible on the right side of the receiver.

This weapon is actually called Mark 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle. Even though the internal parts are from an M14, this weapon is only called M14 EBR in US Army service. This is a common mistake. It was developed for the US Navy SEALs, and thus it is type classified as a "Mark" weapons system by them.

Springfield Armory M1A with synthetic stock - 7.62x51mm

A civilian version of the M14; identifying feature is that the rifle lacks a selector switch. Some rifles may have the bayonet lug removed and a muzzle brake in place of a flash hider. Not made by the government armory but a private company of the same name. Some of these weapons are used to impersonate actual M14s or M21s in movies. Sometimes a fake selector switch is installed on some of the movie guns, despite still being semi auto only rifles. The M1As were available to the public for purchase after 1974 and sans selector switch, were virtually identical to the Army's M14 Rifles. After the first California Assault Weapon ban of 1989, Springfield Armory and Colt both saw the writing on the wall. Even though they could still sell renamed identical weapons to California, they started removing cosmetic features like bayonet lugs, being that anti gun politicians criticized the lugs as well as the flash hiders. After Clinton's Federal Assault Weapon ban of 1994, all production M1As were shipped with muzzle brakes instead of flash hiders and no bayonet lugs. After the Federal Assault Weapon ban lapsed in 2004, M1As were shipped with both muzzle brakes and the traditional flash hiders, but Springfield stopped providing bayonet lugs, opting to save on weight. Any M14 style rifle seen in a film with a shaved off bayonet lug cannot be a military gun.

The manufacturer is Springfield Armory of Geneseo, Illinois, not to be confused with U.S. Government owned Springfield Armory of Massachusetts (which closed down in 1968).
