A modified version of the Smith & Wesson 39 for use by Naval Special Warfare units during the Vietnam War, with an extended and threaded barrel to allow the use of a Mk 3 sound suppressor, a slide lock to prevent the slide from cycling to further reduce noise, higher profile sights for better sighting over a bulky suppressor, and an attachable wire-frame stock. Navy SEAL Teams used both unmodified 39s and Mk 22 Mod 0 Hush Puppies; the Hush Puppy was issued to officers-in-charge (OICs) of MST-2 detachments as their sidearm.
A number of all-steel prototypes were made with 13 round [[Browning Hi-Power]] magazines, with a wider grip to accommodate the magazine and without the Hush Puppy modifications, at the request of the SEALs. It was not adopted. The [[Smith & Wesson 59]] was developed as a result of this project.
