The Winchester Model 1200 is an American pump-action shotgun first offered to the public in 1964. Originally designed as a cheaper replacement for the Winchester Model 12, it was also used by US Marines and US Army soldiers in Vietnam, as a supplement to the Ithaca Model 37s and Remington 870s. It was a successful design and was also produced in a police "Riot" model for many law enforcement agencies across the United States. Though the shotgun was well-received, Winchester wanted to develop a lower-cost shotgun that would cut into the market of Remington and Mossberg. The Winchester Model 1200 was one of the models to be phased out when the U.S. Repeating Arms Company acquired Winchester from Olin in 1980. The 1200 eventually ceased all production by 1981 and ceded the pump shotgun line to the Model 1300.
The Winchester Model 1300 shotgun first appeared in 1978 as an "economy" version of the 1200 and ultimately took over the pump-action shotgun line for Winchester in 1981 when the 1200 was discontinued. In addition to the hunting/sporting variations, the Model 1300 has been sold worldwide as the Tactical Police model, Slug Hunter, Marine, and Stainless Security version. The Model 1300 was discontinued in 2006, when the U.S. Repeating Arms Company went bankrupt and its New Haven, Connecticut, USA factory was closed by parent company FN. In 2010, production began on a new Model 1300-based shotgun, the Winchester SXP (Super X Pump), which is currently produced in Turkey.
The difference between the 1200 and the 1300: The external differences between the 1200 and 1300 are minimal, with most the changes being to the furniture and finish. The Winchester Model 1200 has a deep factory blued receiver and barrel. Its action is heavier and harder to use than the updated Model 1300. The Model 1300's internals were re-designed and is now considered a "fast action pump shotgun" (lighter weight materials and design make it very easy to rack) and it is coated with a proprietary non-glare finish and uses both steel and composite materials in its construction. Both the Model 1200 and the Model 1300 were released in a hunting version (longer barrel and limited shell capacity for legal hunting limit) and the "Defender" version, which is the riot, self defense, and combat shooting variant, with longer tubes for expanded capacity and shorter (20" and 18") tactical barrels.
The | Historical Usage: Films make mistakes all the time. However, as a rule of thumb, the Model 1200 was correct for the Vietnam War and was used in small numbers from 1968 to 1969 (along with Remington 870s and Ithaca 37s) by Special Forces units and United States Army soldiers and Marines in the war zone. The Model 1200 remained in the U.S. inventory for limited use until the early 1980s. The Model 1300 is correct for any film occurring after 1981, and by that time, the 1200 was no longer being produced.

Despite the fact that 'guns of the world' website claims that the Winchester 1300 was introduced in 1981 (http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh05-e.htm), Winchester's own manual claims that the shotgun was introduced in 1978.

Historical Usage: Films make mistakes all the time.
For information on how to tell the Winchester Model 1300 apart from Remington and Mossberg shotguns, please visit the 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun page.

Despite the fact that 'guns of the world' website claims that the Winchester 1300 was introduced in 1981 (http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/sh05-e.htm), Winchester's own manual claims that the shotgun was introduced in 1978.
