Woodbridge Strong "W. S." Van Dyke II (March 21, 1889 – February 5, 1943) was an American film director known for several films of the early sound era, notably Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), The Thin Man (1934), and San Francisco (1936). He won the Academy Award for Best Director in 1934 for Eskimo and received two more nominations (1935 and 1937).
