Eskimo
|
Eskimo is a 1933 American Pre-Code film drama directed by W. S. Van Dyke. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by the Danish polar explorer and writer Peter Freuchen, who also appears in the film. Eskimo Mala lives with his family in the Arctic and feeds the tribe as a hunter. With his wife Alba, he sets off for Tjarnak, where a ship has docked. He exchanges fox skins for a rifle. The captain makes Alba drunk, rapes her, thinks she is an animal in the snow, and shoots her. Mala avenges Alba's death and kills the captain. However, this gets the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on his trail.
In 1935, the film received the Oscar for Best Film Editing what makes it the first film to ever win the Oscar in this category.
