The Benelli M Series Super 90 Shotguns are a series of 12 gauge Tactical shotguns based on the H&K recoil system, first introduced in the H&K Model 512 Auto Shotgun. The Super 90 refers to only the defense / tactical models, since Benelli does offer hunting, trap & field versions of some of the same shotguns. The only departure is the M4 which keeps the same exterior design but introduced a new proprietary gas operated system, the "Auto-regulating gas-operated (ARGO)" system.
The Benelli M Series Super 90 shotguns or variants has appeared in the following:
Heckler & Koch Model 512 Auto Shotgun
- The grand-daddy of all H&K/Benelli Auto shotguns. This was the first shotgun to use the H&K/Benelli recoil system. It was first manufactured for use by West Germany's Elite GSG-9 Anti-Terrorist Police Units. The internal design was the basis for all of the joint H&K/Benelli series of tactical Shotguns. The H&K Model 512 shotguns were sold with the 'Man-Cutter' adjustable choke in front, designed to send the pellets in an elongated oval pattern to either cut a man in half, or (when turned vertically) dump all of the shot into the main body of the target
Benelli M1
- Semi auto only tactical shotgun based on the H&K Model 512 design.
Movies
- Used by Rudyard Kipling (Kevyn Major Howard) in Alien Nation (featured optional extended magazine tube, pistol grip and movie modified to use detachable box or drum magazine). [Movie released in 1988, M2 model not available until 2004]
Video Games
Benelli M2
- Trap and Field models are made of the M2 as well as Tactical models. It is recognizable from the M1 due to the lack of receiver screw beneath the rear of the ejection port (as seen on M1); both feature bolt release button directly below bolt handle. M2 also has a unique foregrip (which doesn't fit on any of the other M series shotguns). Also the back of the receiver is slightly different and must have it's own buttstocks, whereas the M1 and the M3 have interchangeable foregrips and buttstocks.

- David Caruso as Dino in Proof of Life (fitted with pistol grip configuation)
- One of the Slag robbers in Alien Nation (modified with pistol grip configuration, extended magazine tube, and rifle sights; modified to take drum or box magazines)
- Nicolas Cage as Castor Troy in Face/Off (fitted with pistol grip configuration and Surefire 628 weaponlight)
