It was produced by the Munitions factory of Saint-Etienne from 1873 to 1886 with a total production of approximately 337,000 and was delivered with a bare metal finish. Although quickly replaced by the St. Etienne Model 1892 with front line French troops, it was widely used during the First World War and still equipped by reserve units in 1940. It was also employed by the French resistance during World War II.
