Ordnance SBML 2 inch Mortar
Ordnance SBML 2 inch Mortar, commonly named just "2-inch mortar", is a British WWII light mortar. It was designed in mid-1930 and put into service in 1938. Main production versions include infantry platoon weapons Mk II, Mk II*** (with a larger baseplate), and Mk VII** (with spade-like baseplate); Mk II* and Mk VII, mounted on the Universal Carrier light armoured tracked vehicle; breech-loading Mk III, used on tanks as a smoke discharger; airborn-issued short-barreled Mk VII* and Mk VIII. 2" mortars were widely used by British and Commonwealth troops in WW2 and Korean War. It remained in service until replacing by the L9A1 mortar in late 1980s. Indian post-war version E1 is still in production and service of the Indian Army.
Note: 2 inch Mk I is a different weapon, introduced in 1918 and declared obsolete in 1919.
