AK-100 series
The AK-100 series is a series of Kalashnikov rifles produced by Izhmash (now Kalashnikov Concern) based upon the AK-74M. Developed shortly after the adoption of the AK-74M in 1991, the AK-100 series formed a "fourth generation" of Kalashnikov rifle designs, and is intended to standardize Russian assault rifle production along the AK-74M.
The AK-100 series rifles feature significant parts interchangeability with the AK-74M, and encompass rifle and carbine AKs chambered in 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39mm, and 5.45x39mm (the latter for the carbine only, as the AK-74M is itself a full-length 5.45x39mm rifle), providing options for both international exports and Russian domestic use. There are also several semi-auto-only civilian rifle derivatives of AK-100 series rifles.
Unusually, the AK-100 series featured a "sub-series" of rifles (AK-107, 108, and 109) that utilized the Balanced Automatics Recoil System (BARS), a unique recoil mitigation system of Soviet origin also found on rifles like the AEK-971. Whereas the BARS design on the AEK-971 was developed by Stanislav Ivanovich Koksharov, the AK-100 series BARS instead descended from the AL-7 prototype rifle designed by Yury K. Aleksandrov.
The AK-100 series was succeeded by the AK-200 series, a series of rifles standardized around the production AK-12 design and the KM-AK upgrade kit.
The AK-100 series and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
