PM md. 63
PM md. 63 (Romanian: Pistol Mitralieră model 1963; lit. "model 1963 submachine gun") is the Romanian military designation of Romanian manufactured clones of the Soviet AKM. Produced at the Cugir Arms Factory (today a subsidiary of ROMARM), early Romanian Kalashnikov rifles were almost indistinguishable from Soviet AKMs, but a number of Romanian domestic features were introduced in later production models, making them more and more distinct from Soviet Kalashnikovs.
The Romanian Kalashnikov rifles have been exported to many other countries well beyond Europe. In the United States, Romanian AK rifles are primarily imported by Century International Arms (Century Arms for short), and are best known under their export names AIM and AIMS; while these names were originally applied to specific Romanian AK variants, they came to be applied to export versions of later Romanian AKs, even if they don't officially use these export names.

PM md. 63
The PM md. 63 is the Romanian clone of the AKM. It is identifiable by its distinctive vertical foregrip integrated into the handguard. In the west, it is better known under the export name of AIM.
Note: As the original PM md. 63 is externally almost indistinguishable from the Soviet AKM, IMFDB currently only identifies later production PM md. 63s with the foregrip handguard.

PM md. 65
The PM md. 65 is the Romanian clone of the AKMS. As with the md. 63, the rifle features a foregrip integrated into the handguard; in order to accomodate the underfolding stock, however, the foregrip of the PM md. 65 notably slants backwards. The rifle is exported to the west under the export name AIMS.
Note: As the original PM md. 65 is externally almost indistinguishable from the Soviet AKMS, IMFDB currently only identifies later production PM md. 65s with the rearward canted foregrip handguard.

PA md. 86
The PA md. 86 (Romanian: Pușca automată Model 1986, lit. "Model 1986 Automatic Rifle"), exported under the name AIMS-74, is the Romanian 5.45×39mm update to the former Romanian service rifle, the PM md. 63. While similar to the Soviet AK-74, it is developed independently from it and is not a direct clone of it, and therefore retained some archaic AKM elements, such as the gas block design. The rifle is still the current standard infantry rifle of Romania.
All military PA md. 86 rifles are fitted with folding stocks patterened after the East German MPi-KMS; PA md. 86/AIMS-74 rifles with fixed stocks (generally nicknamed "AIM-74" in line with nomenclature for Romanian export weapons) are generally custom-built weapons created outside of the Romanian military. The PA md. 86 can be equipped with the AG-40 grenade launcher.
The PA md. 97 is a 5.56mm version of the md. 86 developed in 1997. The PA md. 2000 is a modernized version with synthetic furniture chambered in 5.56mm.

Export Models
AIMR
AIMR is the collective export designation for all Romanian AK-based carbines, regardless of caliber. The majority feature the distinctive side folding PA md. 86 stock and a straight AKM type handguard (the exception being the first model PM md. 80 which has a unique folding stock and an AIM style vertical grip handguard), and all have a 12 inch barrel with the front sight mounted directly to the gas block. They are fitted with barrel threads onto which can be fitted either a standard barrel nut, or a unique birdcage flash hider.
A variant of the AIMR with smooth handguards and the stock removed chambered in 7.62x39mm or 5.56x45mm was imported into the US as the "Champion Pistol". Later the designation of "Draco Pistol" was given to 7.62x39mm weapons, with "Champion Pistol" now referring to only 5.56x45mm weapons.

WASR
The Wassenaar Arrangement Semiautomatic Rifles (WASR) are semi-automatic versions of the Romanian PM md. 63 with stamped receivers, intended for the United States market. Although originally constructed from older surplus spare parts for Romanian military AKs, newer WASRs are built from newer parts, some of which are American-made to comply with import restrictions. Although originally constructed with a single stack magazine well to comply with American import restrictions, once the rifles are imported into the United States, distributors cut out the magazine well to allow traditional double stack AK magazines. There are a number of different variants chambered in different calibers; 7.62x39mm (WASR-10), 5.45x39mm (WASR-2), and 5.56x45mm (WASR-3). A WASR can easily be spotted in a film by its distinctive stamped receiver that does not contain the standard AK dimples.
