The Merry Widow is the 1925 film adaptation of Franz Lehár's operetta of the same name directed by Erich von Stroheim. The young princes Danilo and Mirko from the kingdom of Monteblanco are eagerly courting the favor of the American revue dancer Sally, who is currently on tour in the small country. She is not easily impressed by the pushy courtship of the two princes. But Danilo is serious. He falls in love with Sally, and she eventually falls in love with him too. But courtly etiquette forbids a marriage that is not in keeping with their station. Disappointed by Danilo, Sally gives in to the advances of the rich Baron Sadoja, whom she happily succeeds shortly afterward, and from then on lives in Paris as "The Merry Widow". Danilo, on the other hand, cannot forget Sally and travels to Paris to win her back.
