Ruger P85 - 9x19mm

The Ruger P85 is a full-sized DA/SA alloy-framed service pistol originally designed to compete in the US Military Joint Small Arms Program. The P-Series was designed to meet all of the U.S. Army's requirements, but the design unfortunately wasn't finalized until after the trials were over and the Beretta 92F had been declared the winner. Luckily, the P85 found popularity on the civilian and law enforcement markets due to its affordability, rugged construction and reliability.

Due to the liberal amount of heat treated investment casting used in their design, the P-Series pistols could be had for about $100 cheaper than their competitors. All of the alloy frames in the series were constructed from a hard-coated A356T aluminum alloy. The blued slides were made from a chrome-molybdenum alloy steel. The stainless slides are constructed from a proprietary 400-series stainless steel alloy named “Terhune Anticorro”, after Ruger's Prescott, Arizona foundry manager Stan Terhune. The name appears on some of the slides, making Terhune's the only name other than Bill Ruger’s that has ever appeared on a standard-production Ruger firearm. Small parts, such as hammers, triggers and barrels in all P-Series pistols are cast from this same stainless steel. The two-piece, grooved black grip panels are made of General Electric Xenoy resin.

Many were recalled after a single incident with the firing pin. If the firing pin broke in front of the firing pin block, applying the safety, which dropped the hammer, could transfer enough energy to the broken firing pin to cause a discharge. The P85 was recalled, and a new firing pin safety was installed free of charge that prevented contact between firing pin and hammer during a decocking operation. This updated P85 was christened as the P85 MKII in 1989 and was produced until 1992. By then, the improved P89 was in full production (having been introduced the previous year) and the P85 was discontinued.

The Ruger P89 is an updated version of the Ruger P85. Since the biggest difference between the standard P85 and the P89 is the enhanced firing pin block safety, it is effectively just a rebadged P85 MKII with larger safety levers. The safety levers on a P89 also flip to a near-90 degree angle, whereas on the P89 they flip closer to a 45-degree angle. The trigger on the P89 is also similar to most P85 MKIIs since it is less curved than that of the standard P85.

Ruger KP95 - 9x19mm

Introduced in 1996, the Ruger P95 is essentially a 9mm Ruger P94, but the frame construction has been completely redesigned. The P95 is built with a compounded polymer frame made with a long-strand fiberglass reinforced polyurethane (similar to DuPont's Isoplast), which reduced the weight of the pistol by four ounces. The fiberglass polymer construction was so strong that Ruger did not even need to include steel rails in the frame. Since the fiberglass filler is a natural shock absorber, Ruger would later refine this formula and use it as the basis for all of the polymer used in their weapons in the future. This was done to compete with other polymer weapons and also for ease of production. The Ruger P95 was popular but eventually was phased out by the Ruger SR series and discontinued in 2013. A variant of the P95 chambered in .45 ACP, the P97, was produced from 1999 to 2004 using the original P95 frame design with glossy finish, no accessory rail and a hooked trigger guard.

Ruger P345

Ruger P345 with stainless steel slide - .45 ACP

Introduced in 2004, the Ruger P345 is Ruger's replacement for the .45 ACP polymer-framed Ruger P97. It was also Ruger's replacement for the P-Series as a whole. The P345 is designed to accept Ruger P90 and P97 single-stack .45 ACP magazines. The P345 is very similar to the P97, using the same trigger, barrel, extractor and decocking lever but utilizing other different parts, such as an improved slide, hammer and sights. The biggest difference between the P97 and the P345 is a new redesigned polymer frame, which replaced Ruger's fiberglass-reinforced polyeurethane with a Nylon 6 (DuPont Zytel) frame. The glass-filled Nylon frame is slimmer, lighter, more flexible and more ergonomic than the polyurethane based frame. Ruger would go on to replace the P345 with the SR-series of handguns, replacing the P345 officially with the SR-45 in 2013. Despite the P345 only being produced in relatively small numbers for a mere nine years, the P345 did pave the way for future Ruger handguns as Ruger still uses the P345's polymer frame material on all of their polymer framed guns today.
