Walther P99AS (Anti Stress)
The "AS" model Walther P99 features an 'Anti Stress' mode in the trigger. What this means is that even though the gun is a SA/DA gun, when the slide is pulled back and the gun cocked the trigger returns to the double action position for the first shot to try and prevent accidental firing. The AS is generally the most popular trigger type for the P99, and all pre-2004 P99s are of the "AS" type (although not designated as such) unless otherwise indicated. It is visually very close to the QA model, but can be identified by its larger decocker which is the same as the one found on the pre-2004 P99.

Walther P99QA (Quick Action)
The Walther P99QA features the "Quick Action" trigger which is of the same style as that found on Glock pistols. Once loaded the striker is at the half cock position, and pulling the trigger fully cocks the striker and releases it for all shots. The P99QA is the brother of the more traditional P99AS, and can be differentiated by its smaller semi-circular decocker as opposed to the larger rectangular decocker on the P99AS. The reason for the decocker being smaller is that it is not intended to be used whilst the pistol is being carried but only for storage, as in essence the pistol behaves as a single action only pistol and is incapable of being fired from the uncocked position until the slide is racked again.

Walther PPQ
The Walther PPQ is the latest development of the Walther P99. It is largely based on the P99 Rad and P99Q (specialist variants developed for the Polish army and German Police respectively) but features an entirely new trigger system. It is a striker fired pistol but rather than having a partially loaded striker like in the Walther P99QA and Glock pistols, the striker is fully loaded meaning that when the trigger is pulled no additional cocking occurs leading to a lighter and shorter trigger pull with a shorter trigger reset. Due to the characteristics of this trigger system the pistol is marketed as a special forces weapon rather than a standard issue police pistol (German police specifications require a first shot trigger pull of greater than 6.7 pounds, whereas the trigger pull on the PPQ is only 5.6 pounds). Externally the PPQ can be easily differentiated from early P99 variants by its square trigger guard, wide front and rear slide serrations, the grip texture, a MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail with 3 grooves, and by its lack of a slide mounted decocker.
