A modified version of the Model 39 for use by Naval Special Warfare units during the Vietnam War, with a wider grip to accomodate a double stacked 14-round magazine, an extended and threaded barrel to allow the use of a Mk 3 sound suppressor, a slide lock to prevent the slide from cycling to further reduce noise, and higher profile sights for better sighting over a bulky suppressor. Navy SEAL Teams used both unmodified Model 39s and Mk 22 Mod 0 Hush Puppy's; the Hush Puppy was issued to officers-in-charge (OICs) of MST-2 detachments as their sidearm. The [[Smith & Wesson Model 59]] was developed as a result of the project.
