The '''Enfield 1853 Rifle-Musket''' was a British percussion fired rifled musket that would see use in the Crimean War, the second Opium War, and the New Zeland Wars among many other British conflicts of late 19th century. Allegations its paper cartridges, which were to be opened by biting them, were sealed with pork and/or beef fat that was sacrilege to Muslims and Hindus (respectively) would spark the 1857 Indian Mutiny. The [[Snider-Enfield Rifle|Snider–Enfield cartridge conversion]] saw rearline use as late was the first World War.

Most film appearances of this rifle are set in the American Civil War, as it was exported to both the North and the South to the point it was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners when the British government refused to sell them arms after it became obvious that the Confederacy could not win the war. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported to America and saw service in every major engagement from the Battle of Shiloh (April, 1862) and the Siege of Vicksburg (May 1863), to the final battles of 1865. Afterwards, the American rifles would be exported to Meiji Era Japan where they would see use in the Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion.

The Enfield 1853 Rifle-Musket was a British percussion fired rifled musket that would see use in the Crimean War, the second Opium War, and the New Zeland Wars among many other British conflicts of late 19th century. Allegations its paper cartridges, which were to be opened by biting them, were sealed with pork and/or beef fat that was sacrilege to Muslims and Hindus (respectively) would spark the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Afterwards, the American rifles would be exported to Meiji Era Japan where they would see use in the Boshin War and Satsuma Rebellion.
