Disclaimer

"Please note, this film page is added for gun documentation only, and the members of IMFDB do not support its claims, which many find offensive to veterans and men in service currently." "the members of IMFDB" is not really the correct term as it encompasses all members here. All of which will have different opinions. It should say "members of IMFDB..." no "the members." I have not seen Redacted, so I have no idea how it comes across. But if other moderators decided it needs a disclaimer, then it needs one. Two of our moderators have served. Whether you support our (U.S.) military or not that is your right, but you should show or give them the respect they deserve. Which from what I gather about Redacted it does not, it being a work of fiction is irrelevant to me and many others here. --Predator20 14:14, 3 June 2011 (CDT)

I went ahead and removed the Disclaimer debate in which you participated on the Talk page for Redacted. If you want to debate this issue further, you should use the forums instead. I doubt you'll be welcomed, but your views are at least more likely to be tolerated there. IMFDB is for IDing guns only. In the future, please do not use the discussion pages on IMFDB for anything besides discussing the identification of weapons in media (which, in case you forgot, is the purpose of this site). Also, if debating about the Iraq War is the only thing you're interested in doing on here, it's probably better if you find a more appropriate site than IMFDB. -MT2008 13:53, 6 June 2011 (CDT)

RE:

First of all, I am aware that you'll probably never read or respond to this message. But regardless, allow me to retort:

  • I am not sure what you mean by "fearing most and trying to prevent on this site". You are being extremely vague (maybe it's a language barrier issue, since you've implied elsewhere that you are an Iraqi). If you mean that you feared censorship, my answer is too bad. Unfortunately for you, while the internet as a whole represents an open marketplace of ideas, the same is not true of individual web sites. Almost every site on the net practices censorship to some degree, whether the reasons are political or otherwise.
  • I also don't know what you mean by "nastyness and hate", but you have no right to expect that your left-wing politics (and yes, they are left-wing, and arguably radical) will be positively received on a site where most of the members are likely to be conservative, pro-2nd Amendment, and pro-U.S. military. If I posted negative views of Islam on a jihadist message board and got censored and/or banned, do you think I would have any right to bitch and whine about it? So stop trying to martyr yourself and use some common sense in the future. You don't have the moral high ground when you provoke controversy intentionally and then experience a backlash in response.
  • Let me refresh your memory on something: While I do not have any respect for your political views, I have explained that the reason the discussion was removed is because debates about the war in Iraq, or politics in general, are outside the scope of this site. Regardless of whether the participants are right-wingers or left-wingers, I would not want them to express their views on the Wiki itself. My consistency on this matter is reflected in the fact that I told the other members who participated in the debate with you that they should not have done so. Furthermore, I at least defended your position on the disclaimer issue, albeit for different reasons (I regard it as too political). So it's not as though I'm being particularly unfair to you.
  • The only way to "close your account" would be to ban you. Since you seem to have a martyr complex, I won't do that. The last thing I want to do is give you an excuse to claim that you've been banned for speaking your mind. Also, you can continue to make edits to the site if you wish (provided they are constructive edits, and provided you refrain from stirring up controversy ever again). But if you do not wish to do this, then simply stop logging onto IMFDB.

Hmmm, so you surprise me. Here is my response to your response, again using the ever-convenient list format:
  • I guessed that you were talking about censorship, but "ignorance and extremism"? Um, excuse me? If I am ignorant and extremist, that remains to be proven. Although I have enormous respect for American soldiers and don't regard them all as thugs (the position you put forward), I am not a neo-conservative and I do not believe the United States should have ever invaded Iraq. I also would never deny that atrocities have been committed by some American soldiers in Iraq (in case you didn't notice, your opponents acknowledge that Redacted is based on true events). I am not sure how that makes me "extremist".
  • You seem to think that you are the only person here with a college education, and that we're all "ignorant" because we're not as educated as you. I'm afraid you're mistaken - plenty of people on this site (including yours truly) have Bachelor's degrees. I am currently in graduate school right now (and - if you'll forgive my bragging - at a very highly-ranked university, too). Even then, I do not (unlike you) believe that my education automatically legitimizes my political views or my arguments. So you might want to stop throwing around the word "ignorant" when you talk about me, or anyone else on IMFDB.
  • All of the above considered, it is still irrelevant whether you regard myself and others at IMFDB as ignorant extremists. As I have said repeatedly, the bottom line is that you should not have provoked a political debate, because politics are outside the scope of IMFDB. If a "right-wing extremist" came on IMFDB and decided to use one of our movie talk pages to start a polarizing debate, I would respond in exactly the same way that I responded to you - I would "censor" it. I would do this regardless of whether or not I agreed with his views.
  • For someone who seems to regard himself as intelligent, it is rather surprising that you interpreted my use of "martyr complex" literally, when I intended it to be metaphorical.
  • Your ban request is still denied. If you no longer wish to contribute to IMFDB, just log out and don't return. It's that simple.
