During the 1865 scenes, a young Lynn Hayden (Jay Ward ) is given a percussion rifle by Chet Spelvin (Harlan Knight ) and uses it to shoot a rabbit. During the same scene, Jed Colby (Noah Beery ) uses a percussion rifle to shoot and kill Spelvin. Sixteen years later, Mark Hayden (Egon Brecher ) takes the rifle when he goes looking for Colby.
