The Outsider is a 2020 mystery-horror-thriller miniseries based on Stephen King's 2018 novel of the same name. The teleplay adaptation was written by acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Richard Price (Clockers,Sea of Love, Ransom). This marks the first time that Price has written a horror story - though one with a strong element of mystery and police procedural.
In rural Cherokee City, Georgia, the body of a young boy, Frankie Peterson, is found brutalized and mutilated. The police, shocked at the brutal nature of the crime, quickly uncover damning evidence that pin the blame on local teacher and baseball coach Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman). The police, led by Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), swiftly arrest him very publicly. Despite the evidence arrayed against him, Maitland insists he is innocent. When Maitland's lawyer finds equally indisputable evidence placing him in a completely different city at the time of the killing, the police are left puzzled. A person can't be in two places at once- right?
As the investigation deepens, the police and Maitland's supporters discover similarities between the most recent murder and that of a string of recent, seemingly unrelated, child murders across the United States. Someone, or something, else is pulling the strings, perpetrating a cycle of murder, grief, rage, and vengeance.
All the while- a mysterious hooded figure stalks the key players in the investigation.
The following weapons were used in the television series The Outsider:
