The Avengers The Avengers focused on the exploits of secret agent John Steed (Patrick Macnee ), who was routinely paired up with a female counterpart in order to protect Great Britain from internal and external foes. The show ran from 1961 to 1969 across 6 seasons for a total of 161 episodes. A feature film adaptation was released in 1998 that starred Ralph Fiennes , Uma Thurman and Sean Connery .
