Rifle IDs
I'm not too sure about some of the rifle IDs on the page currently.
The rifles ID'd as Lee-Enfields do not look like Enfields at all. Some have a protruding rods under the barrel, lack the Lee-Enfield's muzzle, and we can also see what appears to be a hook for stacking rifles in a pyramid, which the Lee-Enfield series lacks.
I believe these guys are using the MAS-36. It's hard to tell, but the front sights and receivers look like the ones on a MAS-36, not to mention the thick rod that contains the bayonet under the barrel. In the fourth picture you can faintly make out the deep groove cut into the foregrip. In the fifth picture, you can clearly see the stacking rod.
The "Marlin Ballard" is some kind of flintlock rifle, or maybe a cartridge breechloader. The hammer can clearly be seen in this image:
In the other images, you can see it doesn't have a lever either.
As for the rifles the Tartars use, I don't see too much Carcano in any of them. Some of them use Jungle Carbines, but judging by the screencaps, there's a mix of rifles there. There may be a Carcano in there, but it's hard to tell. Most of the rifles don't appear to have the distinctive protruding magazine like Cracanos or Lee-Enfields have. Some of them even look Mauser-ish to me.
Does anyone have any thoughts? --PyramidHead (talk) 19:41, 3 August 2020 (EDT)
- Doubtless MAS-36.
- I'm not sure but the "Marlin Ballard" may be a visually modified Trapdoor Springfield Rifle, the breech looks similar.
- The Mosin on The Golden Compass rifle 4 3.jpg is an M91 Infantry, not M91/30, as we can see the top barrel band on the end of the forearm. --Greg-Z (talk) 01:48, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
And the rolling block is more like a regular break action. Maybe one of those 19th century Belgian pistols or something. --Slon95 (talk) 10:22, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
- What is identified as "Berdan Sharps 1859" - on three first screenshots the gun seems to be a Snider-Enfield Cavalry Carbine. The rifle on the following screenshots may be a different one (or maybe the same...). --Greg-Z (talk) 14:51, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
- A great thanks! I had corrected the ID at the near future. Not sure about the Snider-Enfield Cavalry Carbine as the screen gun has a metal plating on the buttstock, the only guns, that has it is Remington 1863 Zouave and Berdan Sharps. Pyramid Silent (talk) 16:49, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
Also, the third Ithaca pic (if it really is a shotgun) makes me think of the Winchester M97 Trench Gun. --Slon95 (talk) 18:00, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
I think Arisaka is a Type 30 with these sights, or even a some Mauser. --Slon95 (talk) 18:06, 4 August 2020 (EDT)
- In the second picture of the Arisaka section, I can clearly see the large stripper clip bridges of a 1903 Turkish Mauser, which is most likely the 1930 conversion as the original M03 doesn't have these metal plates on the buttstock. I can't tell if the other pictures show the same (Mauser) rifle, but the fifth picture includes the CETME FR-8 due to the barrel and front sight.
- I also found this --HighPhigh (talk) 01:50, 6 August 2020 (EDT)
Page Name
Can an admin pretty please change the name of this page to "Golden Compass, The"? --PyramidHead (talk) 16:36, 5 August 2020 (EDT)
Single Shot pistols
I think that the single shot pistols may be H&R Handy Guns. Ma Costa's gun in particular seems to have the distinctive diagonal striped case hardening that was on some of the Handy Guns. I think hers would be an 8" barrel, the other is probably a 12 1/4" barrel. --commando552 (talk) 17:23, 24 August 2020 (EDT)
