Isn't it odd how Rains, when he fires his M1911A1:

• runs out of ammunition after three shots, even though he hasn't used the pistol at any point during the mission;
• doesn't have the slide lock back after the gun runs out; and
• manages to get his gun to do some kinetic clicking even though it's a single-action?

I noticed that all of the british commandos walk around with the Thompson's bolts closed...I thought this was just a movie mistake, but during action scenes, they pulled the triggers (bolts closed), the guns fired and then the bolt moved backwards....but weren't Tommyguns open-bolt operating? The original Thompson safety could only be applied with the bolt cocked open. For safety just walking about with a loaded magazine in place, the British cut an extra safety notch on the 1928 bolt so the safety could be applied with the bolt closed on an empty chamber. I would expect to see Brits toting Tommy Guns with the bolt closed with a magazine in place unless immediate combat was anticipated. That second safety cut was adopted by the US with the M1 Thompson series. Good Brit idea.

All original Thompsons fired from an open bolt moving forward when the trigger was pulled. I am not sure about the operating mode of movie blank firing Thompsons; the blank firers may be closed bolt. --Carl N. Brown (talk) 12:07, 7 October 2021 (EDT)
