QBU-88 - 5.8x42mm

The QBU-88 (officially written in Chinese sources as QBU88, without the hyphen), also known as the "Type 88", is a Chinese bullpup designated marksman rifle in service in the People's Liberation Army. The QBU-88 began development in 1988 and finished development in 1996, and was officially adopted by the PLA in 1997, in time for the Hong Kong handover ceremony. Despite sharing some visual similarities with the QBZ-95 and sharing its ammunition, the QBU-88 is substantially different from the QBZ-95 internally, and their magazines are not interchangeable.

The "QBU" three-letter designation in this weapon's name stands for "qiāng" (Chinese: 枪, "firearm"), "bùqiāng" (Chinese: 步枪, "rifle") and "jūjī" (Chinese: 狙击, "sniper").

Despite commonly claimed as being manufactured by Norinco (an export company that realistically has no manufacturing capabilities, that is often confused with Norinco Group) by online sources, no reliable Chinese secondary source or primary source has confirmed this claim. It appears that the actual designers and manufacturers of the QBU-88 have not been publicly disclosed in any reliable Chinese source.

Norinco does however export a 5.56x45mm NATO variant of the QBU-88, known as the QBU-97A. The export variant has also been observed or claimed to have used the names Type 97, KBU-97A, and NQU-03.
