Mauser-Vergueiro m/1904-39 - 7.92x57mm Mauser

The Mauser-Vergueiro is a Portuguese bolt-action battle rifle, designed by José Alberto Vergueiro. The system is based on Mauser 1898 but the bolt of the rifle derives from the Gewehr 1888 and Mannlicher-Schoenauer. The rifle, chambered for specially designed 6.5x58mm cartridge, was adopted in 1904 as Espingarda 6,5 mm m/1904. It was manufactured by Fábrica de Braço de Prata in Lisbon and by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). No less than 100,000 rifles and carbines (Carabina 6,5 mm m/1904) were produced. DWM also produced 5,000 Mauser-Vergueiro for Brazil police. In 1915, 20,000 rifles from the stocks of Portugal Army in African colonies were sold to British dominion Union of South Africa.

Mauser-Vergueiro m/1904 was the main battle rifle of the Portuguese military until replaced by the Mauser 98k (named Espingarda 8 mm m/937 on Portuguese service). Most of the remaining Mauser-Vergueiro rifles were shortened and rechambered under the 7.92mm Mauser cartridge. This modified version was adopted as Espingarda 8 mm m/1904-39. The m/1904-39 can be distinguished visualy from the original rifle by a shorter barrel, distincive front sigh protecting "ears" and ground down rear sight base. This version of Mauser–Vergueiro rifle was kept in service until the middle 1960s, mainly in the troops in Africa, and they still can be seen in African local conflicts.
