M2 Hyde
The M2 Hyde, also known as the Hyde-Inland M2, is an American submachine gun designed by George Hyde and originally produced by the Inland Manufacturing Division of the General Motors company (more famous for their M1 Carbines). The first version, known as the Hyde-Inland 1, was presented to the US Army in 1942 as a cheaper alternative to the Thompson Submachine Gun. Testing showed that the Hyde-Inland 1 was more reliable than the Thompson and had superb accuracy in fully-automatic fire. After some improvements, the new Hyde-Inland 2 was designated U.S. Submachine Gun, Caliber .45, M2 and accepted for production in April 1942. As Inland was busy making M1 Carbines, production was contracted to Marlin Firearms, with an order for 164,450 submachine guns. However, Marlin had issues sourcing materials and equipment to manufacture the guns and the early Marlin-produced M2s were found to be of substantially lower quality than the Hyde-Inland prototypes. While attempting to work out production issues, the United States adopted the even cheaper and easier to produce M3 "Grease Gun" in 1943, leading to Marlin's contract for the remaining M2s to be cancelled. Only approximately 400 were produced and six are known to still exist.
The M2 Hyde is a simple blowback operated submachine gun, considerably cheaper and quicker to manufacture than a Thompson, but extra time and effort was still required to make the forged steel receiver. Its rate-of-fire is 570 rounds per minute, giving it a low, but steady and controllable fire rate.
