Ice Station Zebra is a 1968 Cold War thriller based on the novel of the same name written by Alistair MacLean (the spy author whose works have been adapted into films including Where Eagles Dare , The Guns of Navarone and Fear Is the Key ). Directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape ), the film focuses on the crew of the USS Tigerfish , an American nuclear submarine, which under the guise of a rescue mission is sent to the Arctic to recover a crashed Soviet spy satellite. The cast included Rock Hudson , Ernest Borgnine , and Patrick McGoohan .
