Charles Laughton (July 1, 1899 – December 15, 1962) was a well known British and American screen and stage actor. Among his most notable works are The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, Mutiny on the Bounty (1935; nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role), Jamaica Inn (1939), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Big Clock (1948), and Witness for the Prosecution (1957; nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role). In 1955, Laughton directed The Night of the Hunter that has been selected by the United States National Film Registry.
