Bruce MacLeish Dern (born June 4, 1936) is an American actor. His professional acting career began in the late Fifties when he appeared in the original Broadway production of Tennessee William's "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1959) with Paul Newman and Rip Torn. A member of the famed Actor's Studio he is the father of Academy Award winning actress Laura Dern. To this day he is also (sometimes) identified as the man who killed John Wayne in The Cowboys.
