Brothers in Arms DS
|
Brothers in Arms DS is a portable spin-off in the Brothers in Arms series, taking more of an arcade-y regenerating health cover shooter approach to gameplay.
The game was originally released for the Nokia N-Gage as Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood 3D, it was then ported to the DS and then to IOS as Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes, each version receiving improvements, with the DS version adding new levels and a slightly improved graphics, with Hour of Heroes not adding any new levels but improving the graphics further.
This article is based on the DS version since it added new content as well as to avoid confusion with the main console entry Earned in Blood.
Unlike the rest of the series, all firearms have infinite ammunition, only explosive weaponry has limited ammunition.
The following weapons appear in the video game Brothers in Arms DS:
Colt M1911A1
The Colt M1911A1 makes it's single appearance in a piece of art for one of the Ardennes missions made for the DS version, appearing in an edited Road to Hill 30 promotional render.
M1A1 Thompson
The M1A1 Thompson appears with an inaccurate 32 round magazine as the player's starting weapon, the player starts every mission with it as opposed to other weapons, which are only given to the player on a per-mission basis or after beating the game.
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand can be obtained by the player in one of two versions:
The sniper version is inaccurately called "M1903 Sniper" and holds only 5 bullets.
A version with Rifle Grenades is unlocked after beating the game, it oddly uses an M1 Garand Ping sound effect for it's firing sound (the player doesn't hear the rifle be fired, just the actual ping) despite the fact the sniper version doesn't ping at all.
Both player-versions of the Garand use the same model as NPCs, with no visible scope or rifle grenades.
Most friendly US troops use this weapon and it also appears as a stand-in for the Karabiner 98k being used by German Troops, some German Troops are also equipped with M1 Garands that fire in automatic bursts, these are presumably stand-ins for the Sturmgewehr 44 or FG 42 from the mainline Brothers in Arms games.
M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle
The M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle appears in menu art and can be used by the player after beating the game once, no NPCs use it and it somehow holds 45 bullets in a magazine.
MG42
Like in the console games, the MG42 is a relatively common sight though with much reduced damage dealt to the player. It appears the barrel is reused from the Browning M1919A4.
Browning M1919
The Browning M1919 appears mounted on US Army Jeeps and it's weapon icon is also used for the MG42. It cannot be used directly by the player, as their gunner will automatically fire at enemies in-range when driving a Jeep/Sherman and the M10 Tank Destroyer unlocked as an alternative tank after beating the game. It being present on the M10 Tank Destroyer is inaccurate.
M1 Bazooka
The M1 Bazooka appears as the anti-tank weapon of the game, it is also used by Germans as a stand-in for the Panzerschreck as NPCs often refer to German troops as using Panzerschrecks. It is inaccurately called the M9A1 "Bazooka" when picked up mid-mission.
M9A1 Bazooka
The M9A1 "Bazooka" appears on the artwork for one of the missions.
M26 grenade
The M26 hand grenade appears as the grenade of the game, used by both US and German troops, like in the console games, the player can climb ontop of a tank and throw a grenade down the hatch to destroy it unlike the console games, NPCs will do this as well. (With this depleting a solid chunk of the player tank's health if an enemy soldier manages to climb ontop of their tank.) While likely intended to be an Mk 2 hand grenade, the icon resembles the M26
8.8 cm Flak 37
The Flak 37 appears in several missions as an enemy emplacement, it can be destroyed with explosives.
