Big Fish is a 2003 fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and starring Ewan McGregor , Albert Finney , Billy Crudup and Jessica Lange, with Marion Cotillard , Steve Buscemi , Helena Bonham Carter , and Danny DeVito . The film the first American film for Marion Cotillard as well as the feature film debut of Miley Cyrus, who played a small role and was still known by her birth name "Destiny Cyrus." The film was based on Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions . Longtime Burton collaborator Danny Elfman was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Grammy for his score, but ultimately did not win either. A musical adaptation of the novel and film opened on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theater in October of 2013 and ran for three months.
