Carnivores 2 (1999)

Carnivores 2 is the sequel to the 1998 hunting simulator Carnivores. Like its predecessor, Carnivores 2 revolves around the hunting of prehistoric dinosaurs on an an alien planet. Carnivores 2 adds more weapons, more dinosaurs, and larger hunting grounds. The game was directly followed by Carnivores Ice Age, which in turn was followed by Carnivores Cityscape and the popular fan game Carnivores Triassic. To this day, Carnivores 2 remains the more popular title of the franchise, due to the fact that it is rather simple and easy to mod. The game was eventually ported to the i/OS devices and the PlayStation 3. A remake was released on Steam during 2015 titled Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter Reborn.

The following weapons appear in the video game Carnivores 2:

Pistols

Browning BDA

A pistol that weakly resembles a Browning BDA (judging by the slide and overall shape) appears as a new weapon, being one of two weapons that the player can start off with before they can accumulate points for larger weapons. Extra manual text mentions it being chambered in '9mm,' and each magazine carries eight rounds. It's the weakest of the weapons, but is useful late in the game as a backup weapon to finish off a charging dinosaur.

The Browning BDA on the select menu, identifiable by it's unique slide. Notice how the hammer seems to simply jut off of the back with no real rhyme or reason. It's possible that a toy was used as a base for the game's model.

Checking out the sights is how you view your gun in this game. Currently, there's nothing to aim at.

An empty gun on an island full of dinosaurs is not a useful one. The Hunter reloads his BDA.

Shotguns

Remington 870

What looks like a Remington 870 MCS Entry shotgun appears as the game's new shotgun. It's capable of firing buckshot (referred to as "buck-shot bullets" ingame), and the weapon maintains some usefulness even at long range. The 870 is loaded via a seven-round magazine which, for some very odd reason, is loaded directly, and entirely, into the magazine tube. The magazine itself doesn't even look large enough to carry seven shells. However, this is the future.

Two dead dinosaurs later, the Remington seems to have a rail textured onto the top of the gun.

After blasting the dirt, the Hunter pumps his shotgun in a dramatic fashion. The shotgun in Carnivores was semi-automatic.

With dead trophy dinosaurs in his wake, the Hunter reloads after a successful day. However, he decides that his box magazine should be mushed into the magazine tube. If you watch carefully, you'll see that the magazine will actually pull itself into the weapon without the Hunter touching it. His hand movements, however, still move in a way to make it look like he's slapping it in.

Double-Barreled Shotgun

A somewhat generic Double Barreled Shotgun appears in the game with what appears to be a mix of wooden and synthetic furniture. According to the gun's description, the shotgun is so loud that it can even scare certain carnivores away, such as the Velociraptor. The shotgun best resembles a Stoeger/IGA Coach gun.

The select screen, which offers information on the shotgun. Like the other select screen long guns, no stock is visible. Note that the word "Tranquilizer" is highlighted. This indicates that all weapons are currently non-lethal, regardless of the type of weapon. Tranquilizing animals garners 15% more points for trophy dinosaurs, as opposed to outright killing them.

As with the last game, the only way to view your weapon is to aim it.

Fire two shots, and it's time to reload. The i/OS port actually removes the reload animation, making the weapon far more viable and useful than the pump-action shotgun. Note the blue shells.

KS-23

A weapon that appears to be similar to a Russian KS-23 appears in the game, called the 'Rifle.' In a way, this makes sense as KS-23 has a rifled barrel. Other than that, the weapon is treated as a hunting rifle, and not as a shotgun. The KS-23 is fed via a tiny magazine that is inserted straight into the handguard. The weapon is actually a retooling of the previous game's shotgun weapon, as it features both similar functionality and the shotgun's description. In fact, despite being called 'Rifle,' the game's description outright calls the weapon a shotgun (Technically not incorrect, as far as the KS-23 is concerned). The KS-23 also features the same ring sight that the Carnivores shotgun possessed. A KS-23 with a longer barrel and no ring sight is used as the select screen image of the 'Sniper Rifle,' although no actual ingame model for the scoped KS-23 exists. All the player sees of the scoped shotgun is, as one could guess, the scope.

We can actually make out the stock here at the bottom of the screen, which otherwise isn't visible. Also note that each magazine holds seven rounds. A variant of the KS-23, the KS-23K, is actually fed via a seven round magazine.

The scoped variant has a longer barrel with no sights, and a rather simple looking scope.

All we see of the sniper variant is the crosshair and inside of the scope. The sniper is actually more powerful than the standard rifle, but the lack of peripheral vision allows carnivores to sneak up on you. If you look closely, you'll see that the hunter is aiming at a Parasaurolophus.

Other

X-Bow

Though not a firearm, the ever important X-Bow appears once again in the franchise. It retains the same functionality as before, though it's now a tad more accurate.

The X-Bow takes up a considerable portion of the screen, but not as much as the SVD Dragunov.
