Ice Station Zebra is a 1968 Cold War film based on Alistair Maclean's novel of the same name. Directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape), the film focuses on the crew of an American nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Tigerfish, which under the guise of a rescue mission is sent to Antarctica to recover a crashed Soviet spy satellite.

The U.S Marine platoon providing security for U.S.S Tigerfish during the mission are armed with M16 rifles. 1st Lieutenant Russell Walker (Tony Bill) and Captain Leslie Anders (Jim Brown) are both prominently shown handling the M16 at various points in the film, and some Navy sailors also hold M16s when they are engaged in a standoff with Soviet troops.
Mortars
Soviet paratroopers fire mortars with smoke rounds at the Americans after Farraday attempts to trick them, leading to a brief gunbattle.
