Nambu Type 14
The Nambu Type 14 is the successor to Kijirou Nambu's previous pistol design, adopted as the standard sidearm for officers of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1927. It would see service in this role during Japan's war in China in the 1930s and through to the end of World War II. Its 8x22mm cartridge was fairly underpowered compared to the standard sidearm cartridges of other nations of the era, and many senior officers (who, as with many nations, purchased their own sidearms) preferred pistols like the FN Model 1910. The Type 14 was sometimes colloquially called a "Japanese Luger" by American troops of the time due to its silhouette, but the designs are not related.
Due to complaints about difficulty using the pistol with gloves, it was redesigned with an elongated trigger guard in 1936, resulting in what was unofficially (in both Japanese and English) referred to as the "late" model. The cocking knob was later simplified to a knurled design as well; as this change came later, many Type 14s would feature the elongated trigger guard paired with the original slotted cocking knob. In 1944, a simplified redesign named Type 19 (or "North China Type 19") was produced in extremely limited numbers in an attempt to keep troops cut off in China supplied.
On an even more obscure note, following experiments done with the preceding Nambu design in the 1920s, a small batch of prototype Type 14s were modified into pistol swords, fitted with a guntou blade built into the right-side grip panel.
