El Dorado is a 1966 Western that is considered the second film in Howard Hawks' "trilogy" of films that featured John Wayne in a story of a sheriff who must defend his office against an aggressive outlaw element in the town. The other two films are 1959's Rio Bravo and 1970's Rio Lobo. In this film, John Wayne stars as Cole Thornton, a gunfighter who helps an old friend protect a group of ranchers from a rival who had previously hired Colt. The film's cast includes James Caan, Ed Asner, and Robert Mitchum, whose son Christopher Mitchum would later co-star with Wayne in Rio Lobo and Big Jake.

The following weapons were used in the film El Dorado:

Revolvers

Colt Single Action Army "Quick Draw"

The Colt SAA "Quick-Draw" is used by numerous characters throughout the movie, most notably Cole Thornton (John Wayne), Sheriff J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) and Bart Jason (Ed Asner).

Colt Model 1917

During the shootout at the church, the revolver used by J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) appears to change to a double-action, modern revolver that resembles a Colt Model 1917. The modern revolvers often was used in Westerns filmed in the 1950's - 1960's, when the revolver needed to be fired with the speed required by the script. Usually (but not in this case), the production would disguise the revolvers with a fake ejector rod to make it resemble an SAA.

Shotguns

Cut-down Double Barrel 12 Gauge

When Alan Bourdillion Traherne aka "Mississippi" (James Caan) proves to be more adept with a knife than a handgun, Thornton (John Wayne) gets him a cut down double barreled 12 gauge side by side shotgun to carry in a thigh holster. The shotgun also has a cutdown stock.

Remington-Keene Repeating Rifle

The Remington-Keene Repeating Rifle makes a rare movie appearance in the hands of Mrs. MacDonald (Diane Strom). The version she is carrying appears to be the Remington-Keene Deluxe Sporter based on the design of the rifle stock and the long exposed barrel.
