The Heckler & Koch USP (Universelle Selbstladepistole, or "Universal Self-loading Pistol") was first introduced in 1993 and is still currently manufactured. It is offered in several calibers - 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. The .45 ACP version of the USP has a slightly longer barrel and a slightly taller grip than the 9mm and .40 S&W models.

The Heckler & Koch P8 is a variant of the USP adopted by the German army Bundeswehr, chambered in 9x19mm. The P8 has minor differences from the standard USP model, these being translucent magazines, a reversed safety/decocker lever and a traditional lands-and-grooves barrel instead of a polygonal barrel.

Note: As a police officer, Ritter should use a P10 (=modified USP Compact) or a P2000 (new modell based on the P10/USP Compact) instead of the military only P8.
