Among his most notable works are The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933) for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, Mutiny on the Bounty (1935; nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role), Jamaica Inn (1939), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Big Clock (1948), and Witness for the Prosecution (1957; nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role). In 1955, Laughton directed The Night of the Hunter that has been selected by the United States National Film Registry.
