North and South: Book II (also known as North and South Book 2: Love and War, after the title of the original novel) is a 1986 6-part miniseries, the second part of a trilogy adapted from trilogy of novels North and South by John Jakes. It depicts the story of two large families: Mains, planters from South Carolina, and Hazards, industrialists from Pennsylvania, during the Civil War. Main characters are Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) and George Hazard (James Read) who became friends while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point. While fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War, they still struggle to maintain their friendship.
The following weapons were used in the miniseries North and South: Book II:
A Colt Dragoon revolver is seen in hands of a Confederate Army Sergeant in the Battle of Antietam.
Colt 1851 Navy
Colt 1851 Navy are widely used throughout the series, notably by Union Brigadier General George Hazard (James Read), 1st US Sharpshooters regiment Lt. Stephen Kent (Whip Hubley), and Confederate officers Maj. Joshua Dupree (Patrick Dollaghan), Capt. Charles Main (Lewis Smith), Capt. Thomas Turner (Wayne Newton), Lt. Ambrose Pell (James Houghton), and Lt. Jimmy Pickles (Gary Grubbs). These revolvers mostly can be identified as cap and ball guns (see below for cartridge version).
A compact version of Colt 1851 Navy, known as "Sheriff's", with nickel finish is used by Rafe Beaudeen (Lee Horsley), former Confederate Army officer turned gambler. A blued revolver of same model is seen in hands of Confederate soldier in the Battle of Antietam Creek.
Colt 1860 Army
Colt 1860 Army are widely used throughout the series, notably by 1st US Sharpshooters regiment Lt. Billy Hazard (Parker Stevenson), Confederate Gen. Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) (one of two of his usual revlolver, together with a Remington 1858 New Army) and Capt. Charles Main (Lewis Smith), Southern volunteer Augusta Barclay (Kate McNeil), former slave turned gang boss Cuffey (Forest Whitaker) and dismissed overseer of Mont Royal estate Salem Jones (Tony Frank). These revolvers are mostly cap and ball guns.
Two versions of cartridge Colt 1860 Army revolvers are seen.
The first model, mostly used by Lt. Billy Hazard (Parker Stevenson), lacks the loading lever under the barrel. Gen. Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) briefly holds this revolver instead of his usual common Colt Army.
The second model has a standard construction, cartridge cylinder and silver finish; it is seen in hands of a boss of street thugs in Charleston (uncredited). This revolver has nothing with Richards or Richards-Mason conversions and most likely is a modern replica, made for cartridge loading with keeping the outlook of cap and ball Colt Army.
A nickel plated single barreled Derringer pistol, most likely a Colt Thuer Derringer, is seen in hands of Burdetta Halloran (Morgan Fairchild) when she threatens her former lover and business partner Elkanah Bent. Derringers are confiscated from captured Union officers in Libby Prison in Richmond; one of them looks like a similar nickel plated Colt Thuer, while another one has more common finish.
Sharps Pepperbox
One more derringer, confiscated from captured Union officers in said scene, is a Sharps Pepperbox with pearl grips.
Philadelphia Derringer
What appears to be a kind of Philadelphia Derringer is hold by Clarissa Main (Jean Simmons) when she confronts the commander of Union cavalry who plans to burn Mains estate.
Rifles
Henry 1860
A Union soldier carries a Henry 1860 rifle in the scene of the surrender of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox in April 1865.
Sharps 1859 Rifle
Sharps 1859 Rifles are used by 1st US Sharpshooters personnel, notably Lts. Billy Hazard (Parker Stevenson), Rudy Bodford (Michael Dudikoff), and Stephen Kent (Whip Hubley). Unlike genuine Sharps 1859 rifles, screen guns lack patchbox on buttstocks.
Both Union and Confederate cavalrymen use Sharps carbines, most likely Sharps 1863 Carbines. These guns are also seen in hands of Cuffey (Forest Whitaker) and one man of his gang.
M1841 Mississippi Musket
Some Confederate soldiers carry M1841 Mississippi Muskets. These guns are also seen among weapons, smuggled by Elkanah Bent.
Springfield 1861 and 1863
Springfield 1861 rifled muskets are widely used by Union and Confederate soldiers. Some of them appear to be Model 1863.
Enfield Pattern 1853 rifled muskets are also used by both sides. They can be identified by the position of sling swivel on top barrel band, as opposed to Springfield muskets with sling swivel on second barrel band.
Various percussion cap muskets of unclear models are seen.
Percussion Cap Carbine
Various percussion cap carbines of unclear models are seen.
Kentucky Rifle
Kentucky rifles are seen in several scenes. Most if not all of these guns have percussion cap locks.
Shotguns
Double Barreled Percussion Shotgun
Double Barreled Percussion Shotguns, differed from breal-open shotguns by the ramrod below the barrels and solid construction, are seen in several scenes. They are used by Confederate Capt. Charles Main (Lewis Smith) and Lt. Ambrose Pell (James Houghton), Brett Main Hazard (Genie Francis), former slaves in Mont Royal - Ezra (Beau Billingslea) and Semiramis (Erica Gimpel), and members of Cuffey's gang.
