Manhattan Melodrama is an American Pre-Code crime film that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy in their first of fourteen collaborations together, released in May 1934 just weeks before The Thin Man. Powell and Clark Gable play childhood friends whose lives diverge as Powell's character, Jim Wade, rises through the ranks of New York's district attorney's office while Gable's "Blackie" Gallagher is a crooked gambler connected to the city's underworld.

Manhattan Melodrama is notable for being the last film that notorious bank robber John Dillinger saw before he was shot to death by federal agents outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934.
